Poster 01, 02, 03 - Final Wrap-up & Thoughts

Final Thoughts

  • Gatorboard is very difficult to cut. I’ll stick with foamcore as necessary. But it is impressively strong.
  • Also not having enough gatorboard after making a mistake on poster 02, I had to use the other side of the board, thus it has remanients of the other poster on its back. (eck!)
  • Self-lamination is cheaper, but it is very diffcult to do by yourself.
  • My Epson COLOR 3000 is on its last leg. No matter how many times I clean the print heads, re-align the heads, it still streaks. At 300dpi, 720dpi or 1440 dpi… it streaks.
  • Total cost to print, mount, and laminate was roughly $45 (not including ink).
  • I really enjoy this digital method for process notebooks. I’ve quickly looked back at what I need, and it has helped keep me organized.

For the third poster, a type foundry, I have selected OurType due to their unique features and flexibility, as well as their cultural background.

Poster 02 Research - Non-profit Organisation

Yes, organisation in this case must be spelled with an s. Why? The non-profit chosen for this part of the project is a British Charity

Safe Partnerships Limited is a non-profit organization that aids to holistically apply "policies and strategies into local actions that benefit victims of domestic violence and burglary and people vulnerable to those crimes." 1

They purpose is to "advice and offer home security to victims and potential victims…, working entirely with vulnerable people in their own homes, many of whom have been traumatised by domestic violence, burglary and hate crime… [to] provide nationally monitored and quality assured services that are tailored to local needs." 2 Their audience is "local government authorities, Crime and Disorder Partnerships, Police Forces, Fire and Rescue services, and practitioners." 3

Visual identity of the organisation is very scatterd, presented in blue and gold, similar to the athletic colors of Notre Dame.

The logo, somewhat outdated, does provide an identity, albeit very rudimentary in its typographical form. It offers potential to be converted into a one, two, and three color formats.

The company was chosen because of their location (England/Wales), their color palette, and their objectives. As a student designer, it is key to open yourself up to multiple opportunities. Limiting yourself to what is comfortable does not offer your the chance to explore. Objectively and culturally, this choose will present itself as a challenge, one worth research into British design trends, local dialetic trends, culutral trends, and older audience targets.

goal: design poster identifying purpose of non-profit (crime prevention)

purpose: deterring crime and protecting victims

    location: england/wales, uk

thoughts: interesting use of duotone/tritone imagery and typography

Extreme Makeover, Inital Ideas

After mind mapping some thoughts, I’ve begun to push in different directions. I intially started with marketing and product placement, but I began moving away from impressions towards art. Art, as an impression, is something unique to tackle. Not just the making of an art piece, but the transformation of a current art piece to be interpreted into something anew stuck with me last night (my inability to fall asleep left me to the point of absurd thinking ad nasuem).

In another class I am taking, we began to disucss the shift of classical and modern art brought on by the camera. As we discussed editing of film, we discussed Kuleshov’s experiments in editing, taking note that combining two motion images together does not create a sum of its parts, but creates a new being altogether with different interpretations being made in his different experiments.

So can a change to a piece of art become a different piece altogether? This should be the case, for the entire project is about creating a unique and different interpretation via cosmetic alterations.

I also explored into the mediums of art, relationships between stereotypes and materials, coming to a few interesting branches.

Thought: Visual Philosophy

Is art the pragmatic approach to a visual philosophy?

I now have an entire semester to understand the meaning of pragmatism and to develop ‘visual philosophy’.

A makeover implies a new change. The project assignment is to cover an object to give it a new impression or interpretation.

Prior Art: Anti-Advertising Agency (Shop-dropping, Subverts), Graffiti Research Lab, Aram Bartholl (Silver Cell, TV-Filter), Jason Eppink (Pixelator), Limor Fried ("Social Defense Mechanisms"), Design Noir
